Dominican Republic
Overview |
|
The
first thing to be aware of when
talking about the Dominican
Republic is its sheer size. Taking
up the eastern two thirds of the
island of Hispaniola (the other
third constituting Haiti) the
country is the second largest in
the Caribbean with a population of
almost 9 million people.
Santo Domingo, the capital, is the
oldest city in the New World and
was Columbus’ first landing site
in 1492. The country's history
thereafter is marked by Spanish
and French influence leading up to
the proclamation of independence
in 1844 by forefather Juan Pablo
Duarte. Since 1966, the country
has held free elections every four
years.
A relatively new holiday
destination, it’s only been over
the last few decades that the
country has embarked upon a resort
development program,
particularly in the north of the
island with
all inclusive resorts
popping up along the coastline,
particularly at La Romana and
Puerto Plata, though developments
continue apace around the white
beached rim of the island.
The primary attraction, apart from
the year round sunshine and
excellent beaches and amenities is
cost – this is undoubtedly one of
the cheapest Caribbean
destinations to head for with many
all inclusive complexes offering
exceptional value.
Dominican
Republic Rental Villa
complexes and private developments
are also springing up in the major
resorts, but there are also many
secluded inland destinations that
offer excellent value. The
people are genuinely friendly and
amongst the most personable in the
Caribbean.
Geographically, the island is
extremely varied with impressive
mountain ranges hugged by
beautiful rivers and waterfalls,
set amongst mangrove forests all
teeming with wildlife. One of the
most spectacular sights off the
island is the annual migration of
humpback whales to Bahia de Samana
- they come here and put on
impressive shows as they try to
woo females in a time honored
mating ritual.

Times not to go:
June to September is Hurricane
season in the Dominican Republic
and although they are very
infrequent it is best to stay away
during this time as a hurricane,
no matter the size, could
completely ruin your break.
However, one particular
Dominican
Republic villa rental company,
Caribbean Vacation
Properties, offer a
"Rain Guarantee" specifically
for this purpose - making vacations
possible all year long. |
